The role of vets in animal welfare

The month of May saw #TheAnimalWelfareConversation podcast focus on the important contribution of veterinary nurses to animal welfare. Now, we look back at the amazing vets that I’ve had the opportunity to meet through the podcast.

First of all, for any aspiring vets, students or new graduates out there, we always start the podcast finding out about everyone’s career – how did they end up doing this job, and what helped along the way? Sometimes it is just down to luck, but I hope that finding out more about career paths, might just help you in the years to come.

What amazed me most in producing these podcasts, was the range of work that all of these vets do. Just picking out a few highlights from the discussions, we’ve considered:

·       Gold standard, and why this is a bad idea

·       Expectations and cost of veterinary treatment

·       Education, education and education (for everyone working with animals)

·       The interconnectedness of human and animal wellbeing

·       The impact of climate change on animal welfare

·       Lobbying politicians

·       The ethical responsibilities of vets

·       What individuals can do to support animal welfare

·       Animal welfare and farming

·       CMA investigation, technology in veterinary practice, access to care and the affordability of veterinary care

·       Anthropomorphism and behaviour

·       Innovation and sustainability

·       Brexit and Northern Ireland

·       Illegal puppy farms, Lucy’s Law, and campaigning

I'm sure there is something in there of interest to everyone!

Some of our guests have also written more widely on these subjects. If you want to find out more about this then have a look at work by Marc Abraham, Tanya Stephens, and Sean Wensley.
